Job Description

Title:  DIRECTOR OF MUSIC MINISTRY

Reports to:  Pastor and Worship & Music Committee

Duties and Responsibilities:

1.      Play for scheduled liturgical setting at 9:00 a.m. on Sundays as well as other seasonal services of the church:  Thanksgiving, two Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, five Wednesday Lenten, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and two Easter morning services.

2.      Play and/or direct others in providing special music (10-minute prelude, hymns, offering, and a brief postlude)

3.      Accompany and direct the Chancel Choir at the 7 p.m. Wednesday rehearsals and on scheduled Sunday mornings, September through June, warming up choir before performances.

4.      Select choral pieces from the choir library.

5.      Purchase all music and music supplies for the Chancel Choir, limiting the expenditures to the amount provided in the church budget.

6.      Actively recruit new members to the Chancel Choir and encourage other members in special music, providing an atmosphere of musical learning, growth, and mutual care.

7.      Work cooperatively with the Worship & Music Committee through the Pastor.

8.      Meet with Pastor and Worship & Music Committee on the second Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m.

 

Skills and Qualifications:

1.      Knowledge of the instrument and keyboard ability sufficient to play hymns, liturgy, and anthem accompaniments.

2.      Knowledge of basic music theory, including simple transpositions and harmonizing of a melody.

3.      Knowledge of or willingness to learn liturgical settings, matching appropriate keyboard music with the themes of the church year.

4.      Experience in choral conducting.

Covenant Agreement

Effective _______________, _____________ shall serve as Director of Music Ministry at Bristol Lutheran Church.

 

The congregation agrees to pay a monthly salary of (negotiable) for the position of Director of Music Ministry.  The terms of this agreement will be reviewed annually coinciding with the development of the annual church budget, which is started in October.

 

In Addition, the Organist shall:

1.      Provide the parish secretary (a.m. five days before being played) with the titles of the music to be performed, such as prelude, offertory, and postlude.  These will be printed in the weekly announcement sheet, put on the screen, and/or inserted in the order of worship for special services.

2.      Notify the Pastor in the event of an emergency or illness. 

3.      Find an adequate replacement whenever he/she plans to be absent (in cooperation with the Worship & Music Committee).

4.      Be notified whenever the need arises for a funeral or wedding.

5.      Give 30 days written notice of intent to terminate employment.

 

This Congregation shall:

1.      Provide for continuing education, seminars, and conferences on church music.

2.      Maintain a guideline for compensating the Organist $100 for weddings and $100 for funerals.

3.      Provide an annual performance review and opportunity for mutual dialog, goal setting, and conflict resolution.

4.      Give 30 days written notice of intent to terminate employment.
