News on Rev. Inshanally Dr. Winston Persaud from Wartburg Seminary and I have coordinated a support network for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Guyana for over 20 years. Bristol Lutheran has been a strong supporter of the church in Guyana and, in particular, Pastor Errol Inshanally. He was elected president of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Guyana last May. It has been a challenging time for him as he continues also to serve as pastor of St. John Lutheran Church, Williamsburg, Berbice, Corentyne, Guyana. What we are trying to do is to raise some urgent funds to purchase a computer and printer for Pastor Inshanally for his President’s office in Williamsburg. We are estimating the cost to be around $1500.00 In Guyana it is critical to purchase new equipment and, in fact, we are trying to have this computer and printer purchased in Guyana. I do not know if people at Bristol Lutheran are still aware of the ministry of Pastor Inshanally. We had received funds in the past through the Bristol Lutheran Church Women with matching funds from the local Thrivent chapter there. Please le me know if anyone would be willing to help with this. FTY-I was a missionary in Guyana from 1974-79 and have maintained an active relationship with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Guyana through the ensuing years. Grace and peace, Paul A. East Africa Drought Months of drought have plagued countries in East Africa (including Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Somalia, & Djibouti), causing crop failures and killing herds of cattle. For many Africans in these semi-arid, rural areas, a herd of cattle is a family’s livelihood, bank account, and retirement plan. The drought and resulting famine now threatens the lives of six to eight million East Africans. Your prayers and support are needed to continue and expand our churches faithful response of immediate relief and long-term recovery through this crisis. Your gifts will distribute emergency food to remote areas, help families stay in their homes and keep children in school, help communities dig new wells, and, when the rains return, help to plant new crops and replace lost livestock. ELCA International Disaster Response has already allocated $380,000 for food, water, and animal vaccinations to be distributed immediately, but more help is needed as the crisis worsens. Our long-term, trusted partners in the region, including the Lutheran World Federation, the Kenya Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Ethiopia Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus, and the Christian Council of Churches in Tanzania will reach families in need quickly and effectively. Your gifts to ELCA International Disaster Response, designated for East Africa Drought, will be used entirely – 100 percent – for immediate relief and ongoing recovery from this disaster. Your prayers and generous gifts will make a life-saving difference. THANK YOU! Give through your congregation or directly to: ECLA International Disaster Response, P.O. Box 71764, Chicago, IL 60694-1764. Note “East Africa Drought” or “International Disaster Response” on your check’s memo line. To give by credit card, call 800-638-3522 or visit www.elca.org/disaster and click on “How You Can Help.”
